Breakdown, produced for the U.S. Army's Battle Command Knowledge System at Fort Leavenworth, depicts a difficult negotation between U.S. Army military advisors and their Afghan Army counterpart. Developed as a training tool for active-duty soldiers, the short film highlights core negotiation isues and tactics. It allows soldiers to study a difficult situation and develop strategies that will assist them in their furture. Sleepwalker members, working under the direction of Auteur Media, constructed the film from pre-visualization through to final render.
Breakdown achieves its educational objectives by accurately and effectively communicating the nuances of the characters' interaction. This necessiated a multi-step previsualization process. First, Breakdown's director rehearsed the film with live actors, capturing the performances on video. These performances became the template for the film's 3D animatic, animation, and voiceover. With the rough performances in hand, Sleepwalker members laid out the 3D animatic. To achieve the project's goal of communicating nuanced character interaction, the film's editing, shot selection, and animation probe deeper than the just the surface dialogue. Through skilled use of detailed character performances and well-timed reactions shots, the film highlights the story's subtext - the character's unexpressed thoughts and emotions - that effect any complex human interaction, particulary a difficult negotation such as the one depicted in the film.
